Eugene Martin is a writer, director, and producer of independent narrative films and documentaries. His work focuses on issues of at-risk youth, immigration, and urban America. He blends fiction and documentary filmmaking techniques in his work. Martin is a 2024-25 UNT Institute for Advancement of the Arts Faculty Fellow. The focus of his fellowship is to continue work on his three part film project, American Street. Martin’s documentary, Portal/Portales, is currently airing on PBS stations across Texas on the television series “Frame of Mind”.  Martin is a former Sundance Directing Fellow and Sundance Creative Producing Fellow.

 

Eugene Martin has directed ten feature films. Marisol, in release on Amazon, is part of a trilogy of films about immigration in Texas. Edge City (introducing and starring Mark  Webber), won the Grand Jury Prize at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Diary of a City Priest (starring David Morse) was an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival. The Other America was featured as the Opening Night film at the Slamdance Film Festival. Martin's documentary feature film, The Anderson Monarchs, was released by Cinedigm as part of the Sundance Institute's Artists Services distribution program to Netflix, iTunes, and Amazon. 

 

Major funders include The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), The Independent Television Service (ITVS), The Philadelphia Foundation, The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the American Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Sundance Documentary Fund, and Texas Filmmakers. His films have been screened internationally in more than 25 countries. His work has aired on national PBS, The Sundance Channel, and the BBC in the U.K. His films have been screened at the Directors Guild of America, the National Gallery of Art, and at more than 100 film festivals internationally.

 

Martin is Professor and Director of the MFA Program at the University of North Texas. He teaches Graduate Advanced Documentary Production, MFA Colloquium, Cinema Verite, Directing Narrative Media, and Scene Analysis. He holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Film from Temple University. He has been a member of the Directors Guild of America since 2013.
